Under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972:
“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” 20 U.S.C. § 1681
In other words, all U.S. colleges and universities receiving federal funding must not discriminate based on gender in offering programs and activities, such as admissions, recruitment, financial aid, academic programs, athletics, housing and employment. In addition, Title IX protects male and female students from unlawful sexual harassment, including sexual violence, in school programs and activities.
