In the spirit of August being National Happiness Happens Month, I decided to work on completing my 100 days of happy challenge. Each day I have made sure that I dedicate time (even the smallest amount) to doing something that makes me smile, laugh uncontrollably, or feel a sense of rejuvenation. In pursuing this goal, I discovered that one of the things that ranks high on my list of activities that brings me joy is exercising.
Exercise is proven to reduce stress, depression, and promote the production of those lovely endorphins that make us feel ecstatic even when our bodies may be crying out in pain. However, I put this activity on hold for the past three years due to my hectic school and work schedule. I recognize now that I used these obligations as an excuse to keep me from striving to become my most healthy self. But it was difficult to allot time to exercise when my time was already limited. Now with graduation behind me, I can finally work on improving my overall health and well being so I decided to reconnect by using My Fitness Pal.
MyFitnessPal is a free app that provides a foolproof way to track your calorie intake and activity levels daily to accomplish your weight loss goals. Its philosophy is that the best way to lose weight and keep it off is to keep track of the foods you eat versus succumbing to the temptation of following fad diets and gimmick machines. With the touch of a button you can search over 4 million foods and input your meal data for breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner. The app allows you to track your steps, log your fitness activity for the day, and it charts your weekly progress towards your weight loss goals.
Another perk of the app is that you can add your friends via Facebook, email, or from your phone contacts to keep you motivated. You can view your friends’ progress by checking out their status and send each other messages about your accomplishments. If you are interested in creating a competitive twist you can challenge your friends, family, or coworkers to join you in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. There are also articles posted providing you with tips and inspirational stories that will push you to remain focused on achieving your goals.
Living a happy, healthy lifestyle is a choice. What decision will you make? Download My Fitness Pal and tell me what you think.
